Rule changes
When the NFL owners getting together this off-season,they're going to be discussing rule changes. What changes would you make,if you were the King and the NFL was a monarchy?
I'd:
1) Change overtime.Good goobley-di gop!At least make something fair to both teams. The guessing of heads or tails should not be the biggest factor in who wins. But opening OT drive wins happen too often.I'm for doing like college, but start the ball at midfield. And only two point conversions.Or a ten minute OT,played in it's entirety.
2)Red Flag Rules. That's the best they could do? How about letting the announcers show the TV audience, and discuss it right there, with the "booth official",and send their decision down to the head judge,or whoever makes the announcement.ANYTIME there's a dispute as to what they saw, compared to the call. Why is that so difficult?I watch games.I see the announcers show us a great view, and get the call right, only to have the officials blow the call.No excuse for that. And how do you limit the times the coach can throw a flag? How about the quick snaps? It's plain ludicrous, from here.
3)Sideline hits.First off, back the coaches and players behind the sideline stripe.Strictly enforce staying BEHIND it.15 yds, first offense, automatic ejection, second offense. That goes for coaches, too.Make that stripe 3 yards wide.If a LB is coming at you full speed ,and he can't determine whether the runner will stay in bounds or not,he has to commit to the hit.If you're on the stripe, defend yourself. You're down, and out of bounds, but there will be no penalty if you get hit.Beyond the stripe is unsportsmanlike conduct,15 yds.The same player does it twice in a game, automatic ejection.
Those are 3 off the top of my head.I'm sure I could think of more. How about you?
I definitely agree with the overtime change. I would just make it exactly like college but start the ball back farther. And I would actually DECREASE rules. It's getting to the point were your not allowed to tackle the QB, this is ridiculous. I don't think the league lost any money when Tom Brady was out for the season so stop worrying about it, its ruining the game. And I would also change the rules against celebrating in the end zone. I would simply say if it goes over 12 seconds you get flagged.
I agree that the QB should be able to take a hit.Sometimes the rusher doesn't have a chance to stop,or isn't in position to see if the QB still has the ball.Just no spearing,or helmet to helmet. The below the knee penalty,if it weren't for some inscrupulous individuals, they wouldn't need that. But some guys are trying to take the QB out on purpose. Can't allow that.
How about a rule that you can't be "Decade" MVP(P.Manning),unless you have as many rings as Brady?
As for the celebrating,it should be controlled, more.I'll go with the 12 second rule. Also,if by some crazy coincidence, your helmet gets knocked off,you have to put it back on as soon as possible.
Also,if the whistle blows(followed by a plethora more),any player who runs more than ten yards into his opponents endzone gets a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.Lump all the unsportsmanlike conducts together, and anyone doing it twice gets ejected, and loses that games' salary.
For another change,(I've been wanting this for years),whenever a team attempts a field goal, the change of possesion occurs when the ball is kicked. Not when it reaches an area past "at or near"the line of scrimmage. If a team lines up to kick a game winning field goal,on third down, say, and the kick is blocked,at or near the line of scrimmage,or anywhere else,it should be a dead ball, wherever it's fielded.
Most kicks(throughout the game) are made only when a team either does so,or can turn the ball over.Fourth down.So if a kick is (unlikely)blocked,it goes to the defense at the spot of the recovery, regardless who recovers it.
But toward the end of a game,if a team can win, they will settle for the field goal.Sometimes they do it on an earlier down,so if there's a botched snap, they can fall on it,and try again.
But the rules state that the ball is live until it passes the defensive line.So if a guy blocks the ball,on the DL,the offense can still recover, and try another kick.I don't like that.It seems to me,if the ball is blocked,it should be the end of the FG try, without an op to fall on the ball, and try again.Lame rule.
Also: Out of bounds on kickoffs. Each time a kicker puts the ball out of bounds, move it up ten more yards. The forty for first offense, the next, mid field, etc.
Great post, RBF.
First of all, change overtime. In a day where the NFL's offenses rule, a sudden death overtime is unfair
2. Fumble rules. The refs need to let a potential "fumble" play out, whether they feel as it's a fumble of not. How many times this season, in college or NFL have we seen a play blown dead because the official "thought" the play was down, and instead it was a fumble that the opposite team recovered.
Let the play, play out, and decide through replay whether or not it was a legitimate outcome by the offense, instead of just blowing the whistle dead because you felt you like saw the player down.
10 minute overtime after that its simply a tie if both teams are still nodded up, and good idea on the 3 yard sideline thing.
I know this might seem silly but if you block an extra point and recover it or intercept a 2 point conversion you should be able to take it back for 2 points. It would make extra points a little more fun to watch in the NFL and i know colledge has a simular rule.
I'm in .Two points for a botched extra point return for a TD.
Got another one.Put a top bar on the goal post, making it a rectangle. That way the Broncos or anyone else can't steal a Super Bowl from us.:).....yeah,it was wide left.
Bottom line:The kick becomes just a bit subjective once it's over the post and close.
The League is gonna vote on a stupid idea,to change the overtime situation.
The New Rule:
If the team that gets the ball first kicks a field goal, the other team gets another posession. If they kick a field goal, the game reverts to the old rule.If they score a TD,they win.
How high is the THC level of the cabbage they're tootin?
I'll bet Snoop Dogg would be jealous, and have to bust a cap in somebody.
That it took since 1958 to figure out the OT rule is stupid should shed some light on the extreme ignorance going on here. We're talkin' 3 stooges stuff. Only the Stooges were acting. And there were only 3 of them(at a time).
I'll bet I can do a Top Ten list of better ideas than theirs.
10) one 15 OT -no sudden death
9) 12 min OT
8) 10 min OT
7) do like the NCAA
6) do like the NCAA,but start from 50
5) do like the NCAA,but 2 point conversions only
4) Any guy who hasn't played, has to start the overtime.Starting QBs are done.
3) All players must tie their opponents shoelaces together, at midfield, for the head refs inspection, before overtime can start.Kickers can't wear shoes, and must leave the field, after kicking.
2) Let the D have a "spinner",who gets to spin the kicker for 10 seconds, just before the snap,on FG tries. The spinner is not allowed to block the try.
and the no.1) drum roll......dydalidadydalidadydalida.....NO field goals in OT!!!
