Joe Haden
Since most mock drafts have us taking Joe Haden I figured we should do a more in depth look at him. Heres a list of how the big name receivers did against him.
Mardy Gilyard (UC)- 7 rec 41 yards 0 tds
Brandon Lafell (LSU)- 4 rec 44 yards 0 tds (haden had 1 int)
Julio Jones (BAMA)- 2 rec 28 yards 0 tds
Out of the teams Florida played this year those are the big name receivers I can think of. Gilyard has elite speed and Lafell and Jones are 6'3 and 6'4. Sounds like an all-around corner to me.
Haden has Reavis like potential and as of right now should be the pick unless Eric Berry is there. IMO
He also held AJ Green to 3 catches and 50 yards (long of 19) and 0 TD's.
Don't forget the fact that in practice he gets to go up against the 6'3, very quick Riley Cooper.
I new Georgia had someone I was missing.
How about his " passes defensed"? Passes against, and passes defensed are the stats I prefer. Those stats shown are nice, but suppose Haden would have blitzed once each game, and his man caught a long TD each time?Suppose his man runs a crossing route, and he switches up,and the guy catches a bomb. So,if you ask me,those stats show that Floridas D did a good job of shutting those recievers down, not just Haden. If there were fewer than avg. throws his way,it could mean he was avoided,or covering so well the QB looked the other way.If he blocked twice as many passes as were caught against him, that could look good. But they may have been bad passes.Stats are difficult to consider,in this area.Game tape is what is needed, really. The rest is posturing.
From the games I've seen (Nationally televised),I've seen a good pass defender, with very good tackling skills.(the Browns were sorely lacking last year)He gets low,and still keeps his eye on the ball carrier. The scouts all have him as the no.1 CB in the country.I've even heard him called the best DB,better than Berry.
He would also help Wright if he could take the 1, letting Wright take the 2.Of course a better pass rush would help the whole secondary, and their stats.
So,who was that you wanted for our first pick, then? :)
Great site for following all College Football stats-
http://www.cfbstats.com/2009/player/index.html
10 passes broken up this year. Pretty solid. 12 each in his previous years.
Compared to what the average NFL CB does (around 20-25 PBU's), it's not bad for college. Playing safety (an easier position for deflections, IMO), Sean Taylor had 15 his sophomore season, and I think around 20 or so his junior season, which was thought to be a huge deal.
Biggest thing is Haden's tackling ability. Just like Wright, he can make the open field tackle, and he sacrifices himself to break up screens, and other plays in the flats.
Getting Haden is going to be what puts Eric Wright over the top, IMO. Imagine having 2 shut down corners. Wright would always be having a good game but then his buddy Mcdonald would make a huge mistake. And since no one other then Wright (with the exception of Mike Adams) could tackle in the secondary, it made the entire unit look bad. Imagine playing the steelers when Ward and Holmes can't get open. I'm starting to think if we do trade Rogers maybe we should get Earl Thomas, having that good of a secondary in a league thats becoming passing dominant would be amazing.
Who's excited to watch Tebow in the senior bowl this weekend?
Thanks for the site,dabrowns41.What are you?A pro scout? :)
I'd trade Rogers for Thomas quicker than beer turns to pee.
I wonder where the Browns have Tebow?I've seen some mocks have us taking Pike,Colt, or Snead with our second, saying Holgrem is gonna get "his" guy,but not with our first pick, because both Claussen and Bradford will be gone, and the defensive talent there..But they also have Tebow going in the first.Suppose he's sitting there at our second pick?Tebow with Cribbs and Harrison entrigued me,but I'll pass on that, now.
If we trade Rogers, and get both Haden and Thomas/defense in the first, where will we go at 2?
gobrowns216;I don't have to imagine 2 shutdown corners.I have tape of Dixon/Minnifield.Those were the days,my friend,....
Haha indeed. Maybe we should start taping the cavs games so when they suck again (maybe next year or 10 years) we can remember the good times.
I really don't want Tebow, I don't care what round it is. The knocks on him were that his throwing motion was to long, no experience in a pro offense and his lack of accuracy. So far in the senior bowl practices he hasn't fixed any of those. Tebow is a project and teams like the Browns cant afford to risk an early pick on him.
He passed well during the Bowl game. But,I doubt he'd be any good in the cold, either, and he needs work on his footwork.I'd want Pike,or Snead,if Holgrem is set on picking up a QB.I think Tebow would be better off staying indoors,or down South.I don't think he'll do well if he goes to Washington.
This is just my opinion cause I'm so sick of watching bad QB play but Pike just reminds me to much of DA he's a big guy with a bigger arm but is inaccurate, doesn't have great mechanics and doesn't even seem to look interested when playing.
Snead would excite me as a 4th round pick but I mean come on, the guy was supposed to be an elite college QB and he had a horrible season. We cant pick the guy just because he was highly hyped before the season.
Maybe we will take the QB out of Central Michigan Lafeavour or something, in the later rounds. He's definitely looked the best out of all the senior bowl guys but he hasn't had experience in a pro offense.
I think Pike has a much higher ceiling than DA.Every time I saw him, except the Bowl game,he was on.He also has good touch with the short throws. If Holgrem has plans to change to the West Coast, even in the next year or two,he would be enticing. If he must choose one, that is.
There's a guy near me,that sounds interesting.I'll be keeping tabs on him throughout the combines and OSU pro day,March 12th.His name is DanWhalen(Case Western Reserve University). He's been compared to Brian Sipe(330th pick,1972),and Drew Brees(Brees was a second rounder). He's only division 3,but he'll get a chance to showcase himself at the inaugrual ohiofootballcollege.com Senior Bowl,April 17th.I'll be rooting for him.
Even if we get a veteran I'd like us to bring a rookie in here, and bring him along.Maybe a clone of Tom Brady.
Pike wasn't good in the bowl game or the big east conference championship game, which are the two biggest games of the year. Nothing about him screams out to me that we must get him.
As far as Dan Whalen goes i know the coach at Case, I'll have to ask him about Whalen when I see him.
The guy I see us taking a hard look at is John Skelton in the 5th round, or so, out of Forham. He's got a big arm, like DA, but is a fairly accurate passer and very mobile, despite being around 255 pounds.
I'm just wondering what the Browns might do,as far as the QB goes.I've seen us taking him,or Snead in the 3rd,in mocks.
Looking at Skeltons numbers,hells yeah,he looks good.I'm in.Does he want No.19?Maybe that's been the problem.We need another 19.
He was said to be in the top ten of all QBs in the draft.I doubt Whalen is even close to that. He'll be lucky to get drafted.
