Tom Heckert
Last night Tom Heckert became the first man to interview for the open GM spot. Last year Heckert was scheduled to interview for the same spot but pulled out on the day Eric Mangini was named head coach. That can't be good for Mangini's future, although its not out how the interview went. I'm still up in the air about what I want to happen with the coaching situation. It's speculated that if Heckert is hired we would steal away John Fox from Carolina, who is unhappy with his contract. Holmgren-Heckert-Fox sounds like a very good trio to me. One of the reasons I wanted Mangini to be kept was the chemistry he created towards the end of the year. But bottom line is the players want to win, I think if Fox is brought in they will be excited and realize that this organization is being turned around. Holmgren and Mangini had there meeting today so hopefully there will be more news about it tonight. One of the things Holmgren said in his press conference was that he wouldn't make a move (aka firing a coach or front office position) before having a plan of who we could replace that person with. Hopefully this means he has already talked to John Fox and depending how the Mangini interview and the Heckert interview went we could see things go down very soon. Holmgren said he wants the changes to be made asap.
ps- Charlie Weiss said he is interested in the Bears OC position so we need to hurry that up! Jim Zorn seems like he could also be a possible option for us as a OC.
Holgrem-Heckert-Fox sounds good to me.
Jim Zorn at OC does not.Jim Zorn as QB coach sounds better.Weis as OC.
We shall see.
I'm pretty sure Heckert is a lock at the GM spot. It's rumored he is still in town and he had an interview planned with Seattle but he cancelled it. Once we interview a minority(Will Lewis i think tomorrow) and the eagles season ends I expect Tom Heckert Jr to be hired.
I concur.Too bad about Weis.I guess he wouldn't have been a good fit with Holgrem.I'm kinda surprised we didn't at least interview him, with his BQ connection.Does this have any deeper meaning,in regards to keeping/starting BQ?
I heard that Zorn would jump at the chance to be our QB coach(Sam Rutigliano).I wonder why his name isn't being mentioned,to come here.
yeah, Weiss would have been a tremendous hire for OC, but I guess the WHOLE coaching staff is going to remain intact...i LOVED Mangini, but i even thought Daboll?(OC) mighta coulda hadta go Dink and dunk does not= good offense. Harrison ='d our offense last year and it panned out to 4 straight wins.........anyone ELSE know the stat on 1-11 finishing with a 4-game win-streak???????
in 1994, Tuna lead the Pats to 1-11 then went on a 4-game winning streak, just like our Penguin. The very following year, the Tuna lead the same Pats to the playoffs...do you think that could happen in our Browns situation? it sure would be a good stat to uphold, and i could go for some stinking playoffs right about now. I even think we might have been able to make a little splash if we'd have made it this year, i know it is a bit of a longshot, but it would have been awesome to see!!!!
I actually think playoffs could be in reach next season. I think there's 2 teams in the AFC with 9 wins but are in the playoffs? Looking at the teams were playing I think 10 wins is within reach but who knows with the lack of QB. I'm starting to think Holmgren hasn't watched any of our games besides the last 2 when he was hired. I understand he will watch game film when studying our players but by doing that he wont see how poor Dabolls play calling was. Maybe we will just have to hope Daboll improves in his second year.
I am SO proud of the NFL,and it's players, for not being like MLB.Football is Americas' new
favorite pasttime, and seeing most teams have a chance every season, with the teams that are worst given an easier schedule, and better picks, and the fair opportunity to bring in free agents,to make the most competitive league they can.HURRAY for parity,in the NFL.
I think the Browns will have an opportunity to not only make the playoffs, but further than they have since the Super Bowl became the Championship game. And I think they can win that.
With the right FAs,draft choices, and coaching,we can be right up there with the big boys.
As far as Daboll goes,I read that Holgrem said that if Daboll wants to learn/run the west coast offense,he'd be glad to teach it to him.I'm warming to the idea that rather than bring in guys who already have their own tendancies,Holgrem is trying to mold our young coaches to his way of coaching/thinking.Cool Beans!
I just read that Mr. Heckert will officially be announced as the new GM of the Cleveland Browns on Monday.
Heckert said that he wasn't happy that he didn't have the final say on the roster in Philly.Does that mean that Holgrem will give him that here?I don't think so.I think that Holgrem will listen to his ideas, but in the end, have the final say. So,what's Heckert going on about?
They also said Lewis(Seattle)might be brought in at a lower position.

Where did you read about Holmgren wanting to teach Daboll? I'd like to read that. I'm not even a 100% sure we will be running the west coast next season.
Nor am I 100% sure that we'll be running a 3-4.
I apologize for not being certain where I read it,but it was either the News-Herald,or the Plain Dealer. One thing I am certain of,I DID read it.
I'm not sure we'll be running the west coast yet, either. The context very likely could have been preliminary. He didn't say he'd had a meeting, and they'd decided he'll teach it to Daboll.
I read it as he said that if the team decides to go west coast,he'll be glad to teach it to Daboll.
Yeah, nobody knows what we're running next year. I posted the WCO thing as an assumption based on Holmgren, and I thought it'd be nice to write an article that wasn't necessarily about the Browns.
I hope we run the WCO, personally, but I'd also like to switch to a 46 defense too, and that most likely won't happen.
Yeah I'd like to see the West Coast too but I'm starting to think we wont. Holmgren has made it clear that he's not the one coaching. Which is why I dont understand how Holmgren could step in mid-season if Mangini gets fired.
I've heard Holgrem say that individuals will not be making decisions, but they will be done by committee. What Mangini/Daboll are going to have to do,is convince Holgrem that we'd be better off not going west coast,IMO.But I think it will take alot of convincing.
As for D,as much as I don't want to agree with Fonzie right now,I'm all for the "Bear" myself.
With Rob adding all his nuances.
Go Browns!!!
gobrowns216: I stumbled across the Holgrem/Daboll article again, and reading it over,it appears that Holgrem is open to the 3-4 defense and the spread offense.

This address isn't working for me,but if you go to: news-herald sports, and scroll down to latest headlines, then click on "Mangini to stay",it's right there.Good article on where Holgrems head is at.
-continuation of last post-
The article is listed in latest headlines, scroll down to Jan.8th,it's Browns:Mangini will stay.
Cool, thanks
it appears that Holgrem is open to the 3-4 defense and the spread offense.

Call me stupid, but i thought the spread WAS the West Coast offense. Would someone please explain the nuances to me?
DB41 wrote a good explanation of the West Coast Offense in other topic
The spread offense is more of a vertical passing attack, whereas the WCO is a horizontal passing attack, meaning crossing patterns, slants, etc. are used more often. In the spread, seams, out and up's, and fades are used a bit more.
Spread offenses also differ in how the line is setup. The offensive line typically has wider splits.
A typical spread offense is what the Houston Cougars, and Texas Tech Red Raiders typically run.
Tim Tebow's teams ran a Spread Option, where the TE's and RB's are used a bit more in a faster, horizontal running game. Rich Rodriguez's teams have always ran a Spread Option as well.
The QB is always in shotgun, and it's a strictly no huddle offense.
In a Spread offense you're typically running to set up the vertical pass.
In a WCO you're passing to set up the run.
I couldn't find which thread it was that I wrote that we might want to consider trading Shaun Rogers but i'm starting to think it's becoming more of a possibility...
