The Cleveland Browns today signed free agents defensive back Tra Battle, offensive lineman Corey Hilliard and tight end Nate Jackson, the club announced. In addition, the team terminated the contract of offensive lineman George Foster, waived tight end John Madsen and waived/injured defensive lineman Melila Purcell.


Battle was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by San Diego in 2007 and spent the season on the Chargers' practice squad. He appeared in one game with San Diego in 2008 before being waived and placed on the Chargers' practice squad. He was signed to the Dallas Cowboys' active roster on November 26, 2008, where he appeared in five contests. Battle was claimed off waivers by Detroit on May 27, 2009 and was waived by the Lions on July 28, 2009. A three-year letterman at the University of Georgia (2003-06), the 5-11, 173-pound Battle is a native of Forsyth, Ga.

Hilliard was originally drafted by New England in the sixth round (209th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. He was waived by New England on September 2, 2007 and was signed to the Colts' practice squad. He was signed to the Colts' active roster on November 17, 2007 and saw action in three games. He appeared in two contests in 2008 before being waived on October 7, 2008 and signed to the Colts' practice squad. A four-year letterman at Oklahoma State, Hilliard started 43 of 46 career games and was a first team All-Big 12 selection as a senior. The 6-6, 300-pound Hilliard is a native of New Orleans, La., where he attended Jesuit High School.

Jackson appeared in 41 games during six seasons (2003-08) with the Denver Broncos. He has recorded 27 career receptions for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Originally signed by San Francisco as an undrafted free agent in 2002, Jackson was traded to the Broncos in 2003. A three-year letterman at Menlo College in Atherton, Calif., he recorded 261 receptions for 3,976 yards with 43 touchdowns during his collegiate career. A native of San Jose, Calif., he attended Pioneer High School.
