Stallworth suspended for 2009 season without pay

The NFL has suspended Cleveland Browns receiver Donte' Stallworth without pay for the 2009 season because of violations of the league's substance-abuse and personal-conduct policies, the NFL announced this morning.

Stallworth pled guilty to DUI manslaughter on June 16 after killing pedestrian Mario Reyes while driving drunk on March 14. It was the morning after Stallworth earned a $4.5 million roster bonus from the Browns.

Stallworth reached an undisclosed financial settlement with the Reyes family and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, plus two years of house arrest and eight years probation.

On June 18, Commissioner Roger Goodell put Stallworth on indefinite suspension. Goodell met with Stallworth and his and NFL players union representatives earlier this month. The league disclosed that Goodell also met privately with Stallworth on Aug. 10 at Stallworth's request.

Stallworth will be reinstated after the Super Bowl in February 2010. He may not participate in any team activity during the 2009 season. He reacted to today's news on his account (www.twitter.com/D_Stallworth18) on Twitter.com, a social networking site.

""I'M A LITTLE WOUNDED, BUT I'M NOT SLAIN; I WILL LAY ME DOWN 4A WHILE 2 BLEED, THEN I'LL RISE & FIGHT WITH YOU AGAIN" -John Dryden," Stallworth wrote, invoking a quote by the 17th-Century British writer and poet.

A judge in south Florida recently amended the terms of his house arrest, allowing Stallworth the privilege of working out five days a week with trainers.

The suspension actually is good news to the Browns because now they don't have to release him and suffer a sizable hit to their 2009 salary cap. It's possible the salary cap will be abolished for 2010. If so, there would be no penalty to the club for releasing him after he is reinstated.

The Browns will get a credit on this year's cap for Stallworth's $745,000 base salary. They still must honor the $4.5 million roster bonus, and, in fact, have paid $2.25 million already.

Last week, Browns coach Eric Mangini declined to comment on whether or not he would have welcomed Stallworth back this season.

"It's a league matter," Mangini said at the time. "Once the league makes whatever decision they're going to make, we'll address it that way."

The NFL this morning released the content of Goodell's letter to Stallworth:

As you recognized both at and following the hearing, guilt or innocence as a matter of criminal law is not the same as a violation of NFL policies. Here, longstanding league policies make clear that discipline is warranted "if a player is convicted of or admits to a violation of the law...relating to the use of alcohol." The degree of discipline may take into account "aggravating circumstances, including but not limited to felonious conduct or felonious injury or death of third parties..."

All of those factors are present here. There is no question that your actions had tragic consequences to an innocent man and his family, and that you have violated both the Substances of Abuse and Personal Conduct Policies. In that respect, you are clearly guilty of conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the NFL.

Nor do I find that the outcome in the Florida courts is controlling in terms of determining disciplinary consequences within the NFL. The considerations that applied in Florida, particularly with respect to criminal standards of proof, claims of contributory negligence, consideration of crowded court dockets, and the like, do not enter into this decision. Without regard to the merits of the disposition of the criminal case, I believe that further consequences are necessary.

In my view, the essential facts are that you had alcohol in your system well above the legal limit, made a conscious decision to drive, and struck and killed a man. As you recognize, this conduct and the loss of life has caused serious damage to the NFL and NFL players generally. Legal arguments that focus on criminal liability under Florida law do not diminish that damage or your responsibility for your conduct.

Despite a repeated emphasis on the importance of avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol, you chose to drive under circumstances where you were legally impaired. And you did so even though safe and confidential alternatives, such as the "Safe Ride" program, were available to you. Your conduct endangered yourself and others, leading to the death of an innocent man. The NFL and NFL players must live with the stain that you have placed on their reputations.

Well,it's final.Stallworth is gone. And he cost the Browns over 500k a catch. The good news;I complained earlier that Stallworth had a stipulation in his contract that said he would have to give that bonus back if he violated League policy, and wondered why the Browns hadn't done that.It turns out that the bulk of his bonus,(or bonus minus taxes) went to the family of the slain jaywalker.I'm guessing that's how it went down.Lerner paid him to pay them.He didn't have to pay him,They could have gone to the contract, and nullified it.I know it says in the article above that they had to honor the bonus. But I am certain I saw the clause.Just too bad rotoworld had to delete it,already,or I'd have pasted it.
     Good riddance!

             The saga continues...

The Ravens just picked up Donte' for a measly 900k one year deal.He claims to be a changed man,and that the accidental death he caused while legally under the influence has made him unable to take mind altering chemicals without extreme depression. So he says he's cured. We'll see what's left in his tank twice next year.Hopefully with Haden or Berry draped on him.

My favorite player, going into last season,Jamal "muscles" Lewis, has been cut by the Browns, after missing the last 5 games last season due to "concussion syndrome".I think he might end up joining his ex-teammates,back in Baltimore.Just to play us.

And the real news of the day,Antwan!!!!! I'm so glad the Cavs went for him,and not Amare. We keep JJ,too!!

I'm not worried about Stallworth at all, its not a bad sign for Baltimore since he doesnt cost much but I dont see him as a major playmaker. As far as I'm concered Good Riddance to Jamal and I hope the Ravens are dumb enough to sign him so he can take away carries from one of my favorite RBs in the league (Ray Rice).

Danny Ferry is the best Executive to every work in Cleveland. GO CAVS!

I'm in agreeance that Jamal was finished. It just goes to show, you can have all the "heart" in the world, but if you don't have the talent, anymore,it just doesn't matter. His concussions could be career ending, but I think if he gets doctors clearance,he'll try to get back to the Ravens, for a back up role.I still don't want him playing against us.Rice never burned us for almost 300.

Danny gets alot of credit, but without that first pick to get LeBron,I doubt he does nearly as much.So my vote goes to Mr. Hart for building the Tribe, under those circumstances,as second best executive to ever work in Cleveland.I consider Paul Brown as an executive,as well as HC,so there's no contest for no.1.Sorry to nitpick. No disrespect intended.

Lol true but if Jamal gets anywhere close to 300 yards on us next year, everyone on the defense should be cut.

Actually your right. I got excited and forgot about Paul Brown (i don't know how). In my mind its
1. Brown
2. Ferry

I mean come on we got Mo, Jamison and Shaq for nothing! Assuming we get Z back. And hey with Lebron, some people would've chosen Wade or Carmello.

The way how the NBA is now, with a soft cap, players able to be bought out and brought back, etc.,there were only a couple of teams that could have went after Jamison. The owners of losing teams are cash strapped and worrying about payroll.I think a hard cap should be in place.I rip on the Yankees and Red Sox for ruining baseball, yet I'm all excited about watching how fun it is to have the shoe on the other foot.i should be ashamed of myself.Maybe after we win it all.
With that in mind,I have to favor Hart.
When he came here,he brought in young talent, and struck gold at many turns. From Joey Belle to Kenny Lofton, bringing in Omar and El Presidente.Carlos Baerga,Manny,Thome,Brian Giles,Julio Franco,Tony Pena, that 3rd baseman from Arizona, all the amazing relievers,Shuey,Poole,Plunk Mesa Embree.Chad friggin Ogea, who won a World Series game by himself.Orel Hershiser. The Alomars,Bo Diaz,That first baseman that went to Seattle before Thome moved there from third.Charles Nagy.Plus,he brpught in eddie Murphy and Dave Winfield.
So what if he looked like a coneheaded alien, the guy was a genius.Except for not dealing Jared Wright, for Pedro, when he should have, the guy did alot for the team and the town.
I'd say Ferry has a long way to go.IMHO,of course.

Ferry is good but be thankful for Gilbert and  his willingness to spend the DeNiro to win and protect his investment and do whatever it takes to show LeBron he wants rings

I wonder how much the decision to legalize gambling in Cleveland, with Gilbert behind it,has to do with his spending.I can picture a statue of the Cavs all posing, with LeBron taking their picture, outside the Q someday. And Mr. Gilbert crazy rich from his casinos.

I would like to see a solid cap,and a fairer, level playing field. It's turning into baseball.I don't want us to be the Yankees of basketball.

I would want to be the Yankees of Basketball

It wouldn't happen. For whatever reasons most NBA players are afraid of snow. Cause clearly one of their 5 houses cant be in a cold city even if it meant winning championships. This is supposed to be one of the best free agents years in the coming offseason but when the reports talk about a star coming to play beside Lebron they laugh at it cause there's no beach here.

I think that like the Indians tried so hard at,once these guys(LeBron bunch) are done, they'll need to keep the ball rolling,so to speak. But I think it would be easy for the Cavs to keep bringing All-Star talent here. What's Jamison?I think Amar'e would have come here in a heartbeat. We just didn't want to part with JJ.,and liked the idea of Jamison spreading the floor.
Besides, once the casinos start filling Gilberts' vaults,he won't be treating the team like a stand alone business, like Jacobs.
Smaller markets have a tougher time in getting/maintaining talent. And money is the biggest driving factor.Beaches are a bonus.I've heard Clevelands' biggest asset is its high priced call girls, brought in from Montreal. Some of the most beatiful in the world. So I've heard.
I find it somewhat shocking that LeBron likely won't leave here to go play in China for 50mil a year.I think there's a better chance of that, than him going to New Yawk. But LeBron will stay here, where he's comfortable.C,mon, the guy has a Starbucks on his property, and he's building a gym for his old High School Coach to teach at next door. Can you imagine,if he has sons, how highly they'll be touted? Will they be able to "come out" after grade school?I wonder how tall his ol' lady is?The man should get married, but NOT without a pre-nup.That would make his agent/lawyer look 50 times worse than BQs,and 100 times worse than Cribbs'.
Did it bother you as much as it did me,after the ruckus in the last playoffs, that LeBron took off so quick to the tunnel, after missing that last secong shot against the Nuggets? No shakin' hands with his supposed buddy,Carmelo.
I can tell the News Herald guy also sees LeBron as immature. The headline the next day;"Anthony Wins Duel".Even though LeBron had better numbers, and it was all the missed foul shots, and the Nuggets better team effort, more than Anthony simply out-dueling LeBron.

But Jamison came here in a trade not by choice, although I think a guy like Jamison would come to a place like Cleveland if it meant championships anyway.

I also noticed he didn't shake hands after the game but who cares. Kobe doesnt do it. Peyton didnt do it after the super bowl. It doesnt matter. I wouldnt want to  go up to someone while they are celebrating and shake their hands.

You do have a valid point,in that the winning players are too busy celebrating to meet halfway, when it's the appropriate time for showing respect for each other, and the game. So,I suppose LeBron is only half to blame.Having said that....

Boy,could I go on a rant about the disintegration of sportsmanship in America. When I was growing up,you couldn't go to a sporting event without the teams shaking hands after games.Or at least, the teams would lineup, and do the hand slap as they passed each other. Some kind of civilty. It's about being gentlemen. It's about respect for each other, and the game. And it's about teaching our children.
Did LeBron learn that from Kobe? ...Time now for one of my fathers golden rules:Two wrongs don't make a right...I'll bet Peyton congradulated some Saints players via the cellphone sometime after the game.I think he just didn't want to get in the way.Still,it would have been a good idea, and if you asked him,I'd bet the farm that he thinks professionalism and sportsmanship is an important part of sports and being American.
Besides,LeBron could always spit in his palm, and give Carmelo a nice, wet, hand shake:)

I read that Jamison said he'd love to come play with us.

Maybe they will make a new rule saying that after the game if you dont want to shake hands you have to tweet a congratulations to the other team.

LOL.Maybe I'm sounding right wing, but LeBron is likely to be the best player to have ever played the game,by the time he's through.I just think he needs to check his ego,and man up,win or lose.
I think he's so pissed at the officials alot of times, that he has to bite his tongue and leave, before he has to grab all the refs and tie them up like one big pretzel, before hurtling them into a dumpster. When seeing the replays, trying to be as fair as possible,I usually see that LeBron was correct. The refs blow alot of calls with him.If the defender gets the ball along with his wrist, the refs usually let it go.If he drives the lane, and there's 3 people there,he almost always gets fouled, but sometimes the refs miss it,or let it go.Refereeing in the NBA is too subjective.I hear national announcers say LeBron wasn't fouled, when I can see clearly he was.I see LeBron get called for fouls when he doesn't even touch the shooter.
It goes both ways, and that's the nature of the game,I guess. So he's got to learn to live with it.He's got millions of people watching him.
I've got a better idea.Fine them a gamecheck, and make them go out before the next home game, and apologize to everyone for their lack of sportsmanship. In a pink tu-tu.Or their indefinitely suspended, without pay.The union would never agree,of course. You'd have to go back to the seventies to get that.

Haha well this is my opinion of Lebron. Can we ask for more? Like you said he could end up being the best player to ever play the game. He's not a ball hog (like Kobe used to ALWAYS BE and still is a lot of the time), he would be the best PG in the league if we started him in the position every night. He's not just an offensive players he's a strong candidate for defender of the year. His game resolves around being unselfish and playing without an ego. Clearly it's impossible to be someone like Lebron and not have at least a little ego but I don't think he leaves the court early due to ego. Is it just me or did it look like after he missed the shot he was holding back tears? LBJ is clearly a huge competitor and it looked to me like he was trying to get off the floor before he was filmed crying on national television instead of just not wanting to shake the hands of the other team. You can say what you want about him but its hard to ask more from the guy. The only beef I have with the King is that we couldn't land Trevor Ariza last year in free agency because Lebron couldn't just tell him he would stay in Cleveland. Ariza would be a much bigger player for us then Parker.

I totally agree with rather haing Ariza.

It's not just LeBron acting less than stellar, where sportmanship is concerned. But if he did decide to do something about it,and be out there shaking hands,I think the rest of the team would follow suit, followed by the rest of the league. That would be most impressive.Something a King might do.

I do believe that he strives,on a moment to moment basis,on being the best he can be.And his emotion after the game was certainly justified.Calling him a crybaby would be childish...Maybe if he just let the tears fall where they may, other atheletes will be more open themselves, and not be afraid to cry in front of the cameras.I for one, would love to see Kobe open up like that this June, while the Cavs are wooping it up!!!
I think it would fun to listen to the losers, regardless who they are, openly weeping, while being interviewed following big games.Maybe they'll even start interviewing the losers first, while emotions are still at their highest.

"Hey,Favre, how could you throw that pick, with the Super Bowl on the line?Didn't you think you could have just run for the first down"?

"WAAAAH! The guy was open for the first BBWAAH down, and I thought it HHNNNHHNN would be an easy SNARFENGGGOOO! catch. We had the game!!Can I get,a,a,a,a,hanky"?I'll be back!!!!"

"Hey Drew Brees, great game today. What do think was the defining moment of the game?"

Waahhh!,I'm feel really bad right now for Brett.BBWWAAHH! I guess it was HNHNHNN that pick BWWWAHH,that,HARNKHARNK,Favre threw.I'm gonna go hug him,BBBWWAAHHH!!"

Reporter: "Well,we had another great tear jerker for you today fans,I hope you're all at home balling your eyes out.Now a word from our sponser,Kleenex, with Aloe."
