PFW: Browns have outstanding draft

Cleveland Browns — No team may have orchestrated trades and acquired more overall value better than the Browns, who traded back three times in the first round before landing their prize, Alex Mack, in front of a team (Vikings) that was considering selecting the draft’s first center. Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi both have starter potential at receiver and could allow for a Braylon Edwards trade. David Veikune is a projected outside linebacker who has a great motor and fits the scheme. Kaluka Maiava could fill a nickel linebacker role. CBs Don Carey and Coye Francies could make the roster. DE Kenyon Coleman and DB Abram Elam, acquired from the Jets for the fifth pick, along with QB Brett Ratliff, could both be starters. Overall, the Browns may come away with six starters from this draft, while also adding character to the locker room and potentially replacing a fifth of the 53-man roster through the draft. GM George Kokinis and head coach Eric Mangini have received a fair share of criticism in their short tenure together, but they may have had the best draft of any AFC team.Grade: Outstanding

Considering we started the day with five picks and got 11 players, including four probable starters, I think we did pretty well.

Agree? Disagree?

Agree...include RB James Davis as a potential contributor.  Including free agency and draft trades/picks, our roster is improved.  I think we hit the most important areas of need this offseason:  C, RG, RT, WR, DL, LB, CB, S.  Lets hope last year's picks have all improved :  Beau Bell, Martin Rucker, Ahtyba Rubin, and Paul Hubbard.  There is potential here.  I am cautiously optomistic now.

I still think we could have done better, but I'm not disappointed. Very solid draft.

I'm most impressed that they wanted to give Brady two nice options to catch the ball after getting rid of Winslow, and most likely Edwards soon or next season.

Hopefully David Patten will be a big upgrade from Stallworth.I was surprised when we let Patten get away.I think he could be a 50 catches guy.If our QB can find him.It looked like Stallworth/Steptoe were hard to find for our QBs last year.I think Massaquoi is going to have a hard time unseating Patten.Robiskie should see plenty of  action,in 3 WR sets.

Patten has only played one full season in the past four years, and has never started a full season.  Plus, he's only had more than 50 catches 3 times in his career, twice with Superbowl bound Pats teams and once with the pass happy Saints.  I think the rookie WRs are going to play a much larger role this year than you think.

I think it was a good draft and I like the big Center in our division. Smart guys and good character is good. We still have alot of holes but, when you can start to build a team around a young OL then you are going in the right direction. Now next year we can build the D and get a beast at RB unless this rookie is a sleeper.

Man I hope at least one of these later round guys will be a sleeper.

James Davis, the 6th round RB, is a 'one cut and go' type of runner, he could make a living running behind the left side of our line.  Clemsons OL was terrible this past year, if he came out last year he probably would have been a 2nd-3rd rounder.

Coye Francies was projected by some people to go as high as the second round, I think he could be good for us.

Yeah Terry Pluto said he was good behind a bad line too, so I think behind our line a good pair of fresh legs will help.(remember the Broncos every year with a good line)

I like Patten. If BE was traded tomorrow, who'd be his replacement?

I think our starters will be BE and Patten,as of now.

I didn't say Robiskie will have a small role. He'll be the new JJ.

I think Massaquoi is to raw,and he won't unseat Patten this year,at least for awhile.

Our no.2 WR might not be on the team,yet..

Jurevicius' role was played as the #2, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is Robiskie playing it this year.  Patten may even be the 'starter' but I think Robo plays more snaps there.  We may end up bringing in another WR, as in this Bennett visit, but I don't know if they'd be better suited as the #2.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if Robiskie and Massaqiou were the 2 and 3 receivers.

If you did know they'd be better suited as the #2,zaklco,you'd be clairvoyant.

Actually JJ's role wasn't the two, when there were 3 receivers. He'd line up in the slot, and look for an open spot to curl to,making an easy target for DA.
But nice try. We'll see who plays more in two receiver sets.I don't think Patten came here to ride the bench.

Not clairvoyant, just projecting the future  Wink

And I seem to remember our top three receivers in '07 to be Edwards, JJ, and Tim Carter, who wasn't in on very many plays (for good reason).  I swear JJ played most often as the #2 that year, but whatever.

O.K.,JJ played the #2,most often.Did he catch more passes with,or without another receiver on his side?(Thus making it a 3 receiver set)I'm sure that stat would be easy to find:)

What I would like to see this year,is BE on one side, and Patten wide to the other, with Robiskie in the slot, between Patten and the end. They'll have to respect Pattens speed, which should leave plenty of room for Robiskie to find openings.
I don't like the idea of putting Robo in the #2 slot alone, because he spends too much time getting past blocks by CBs,and his speed isn't enough that he's gonna blow by most NFL CBs.
Hopefully,he'll improve before the season starts in those areas.
To get his confidence going,I'd like to see him given a little room, underneath the coverage, like JJ used to do.(or not)
Robo running a deep route should be rare, after suckering in the defense through the short passing game,or to keep them honest.
Let Patten and Massaquoi deal with the CBs,and the deeper routes.

 IMHO,as always.

      Go Browns!!!

See, JJ was the #2 reciever, but the #3 option, after Edwards and Winslow.  I have absolutely no problem with Robo in the slot, finding those soft spots under the zone, but if Patten is on the outside, I expect him to be very Tim Carter-esque, and not be very productive.

I'm curious to see just how often we have three receivers on the field, because I expect us to use TEs and FBs a good portion of the time too.  We'll see I guess.

I expect them to go 3 receivers most of time, when they're in passing situations.
 5 guys on the line,1 QB, 1 TE/FB,1 RB,and 3 receivers.Yup,that's 11.

If you want both a FB and a TE,that'll put Patten/Robo face to face with the enemy. And watch Heiden be the guy catching all the balls.

I'd rather see what I posted last time.

Let Patten be the decoy.Along with BE.BE is simple. If double teamed, don't throw it,if not heave it up high and he should catch 'em all.

    C,mon dude.I before E except after C.  (I reely dont kare,just been brainwashed)

It just seems to me that JLew isn't going to be effective without a FB, and the players we have at RT are probably going to need some help from a TE in certain situations.
I'm usually a stickler for grammar too d'oh!

I have issues with having two fullbacks. We only need one.And that's a guy to hand the ball to,when the D expects him to block for Lewis on short yardage.

I'm so tired of watching one of our FBs trying to lead block, only to clog the hole Lewis is trying to get through.Lewis has always been best as a switchback runner, leading the D one way, then cutting back against the grain.Either that or quick hitters, with him getting through a hole before the D reacts, not behind a FB.

As for RT help,we did pick up a good blocking TE in Royal. He also was used in passing situations, and caught some passes, much the way Heiden does.
We shouldn't need a FB along with a TE though, unless there's no RB,in passing situations.

I expect that even a healthy Patten won't catch more balls, or even get more reps than Robo or Massaquoi.

Patten is nothing special. He's not a threat to any team.

He's a veteran with a positive attitude and great work ethic.
