Gil Brandt: Tyson Jackson Going Top 5?

Though many view Jackson as a significant reach for a top five pick, Gil Brandt didn't seem to think so, telling the listening audience of his Sirius radio program that Jackson is a "top five pick. Put that in the bank."
The comment, in itself, is interesting but not specific to any team -- other than those within the top five, of course.
But considering that Jackson fits best as a defensive end in the 3-4 and that there are only two teams using the 3-4 in the top five (Kansas City and Cleveland), the options for where Brandt believes Jackson is going are limited.
I would rather have raji.
I saw this somewhere as well. I found it interesting.
I think Tyson Jackson is a perfect, Ty Warren-esque, candidate for the 34. However, I think there are still a few guys I'd rather have before him.
If we were to get pick #15-20, I'd jump all over Tyson and run away like a man robbing a bank. However, I could pass up a guy like Jenkins, Jason Smith, or even Michael Crabtree.
I don't think Jackson lasts past Denver at #12, unless Sanchez slides.
If we pass on Crabtree for Jackson,I'll think Mangini has a screw loose.
Now,with Stafford,Smith,Curry, and Sanchez gone,I gotta think we either get Monroe, unless we trade BE,then take Crabtree.Case closed.
Remember how good our offense looked when Tucker was healthy?(see Giants game"08")
Wouldn't it be nice to plug that hole, and be able to turn out attention fully on the defense?
My worst case scenario*:Munroe,Smith,Curry,Sanchez go,in that order.
Nobody wants to trade up.
With the 5th pick of the draft, the Cleve.Browns pick:Tyson "chicken legs" Jackson.
If BE stays, and Mangini doesn't want Crab,we better hope Curry or Monroe are available.
I wonder what the Browns would be willing to trade down for,in that scenario*.
I wish we would just get lucky and get a future HOF'er by some miracle and he takes us to the promise land but then again I wish I would hit the lottery aswell.
What do you have against Jackson realbrownsfan? Or do you just not want him at #5?
Let's see.Oh yeah, his nickname, chicken legs.He has very thin legs,I guess. And he can't get to the QB in passing situations. And he plays hot and cold.He was the beneficiary of a great defensive line that funneled plays to him.
Add that to the fact that there's like five or six guys better than him in the draft, for D.IMO,of course.Name them,ok.
Curry,Raji,Orakpo,Maybin,Ayers,Brown.
My choice of who we pick with 5,after trading down, which would be no.1,vary depending on who's there when we pick, and if we make any trades.Lots of variables.
Johnny no.5 needs more input.
Basically,I like Monroe over Raji, right now.Our DL is our strength, right now.I don't know about moving Rogers.Mario could have a better year as our other DEs..For defense,(36) English, and( 50) Johnson,ok?Just give me my RT (he'll convert).
It's close,though,so I'll be OK with (5)Raji,(36)English,And (50)Rashad Johnson.
Then, hope for a decent RT,WR,in day two.And another pick or two in there, somewhere.
Go Browns!!!
RBF, the reason why he doesn't get to the QB is because he's out of position in the 43 defense. That's why some teams don't like him much because his ability to move laterally isn't the best, but he's actually perfect for the 34.
He stands up offensive lineman and gets doubled many times throughout the game. With the Browns, he won't be asked necessarily to get to the QB (that'd be nice), but to take up blockers. How many 34 DE's do you see on a regular basis average more than 3 or 4 sacks a season?
Jackson is a perfect candidate for this defense, but not at 5.
db41; At least we both agree he doesn't belong on the Browns at 5.
You disagree with my assessment on one point(can't get QB because he won't be asked to).Since you didn't say anything else, you must agree that he's got thin legs, plays hot and cold, was the ben.of a great D-line,and I agree, has bad lateral movement.
But there's more.Instincts are off,and does not shed blockers quickly enough to make plays.Lacks explosion, and by no means is an upfield speed rusher off the edge.Struggles to recover when out of position,or off balance.Finishing ability leaves something to be desired.Needs to spend more time in the weight room, and get stronger.
Perfect candidate.
His strength isn't really a concern. Regardless, we have a fantastic S&C program.

They aren't huge, but they aren't chicken legs either. Even so, he plays just fine with them.
His job won't be to shed blocks, his job will be to occupy them.
He isn't consistent, you're right. But with good discipline and coaching, that can be fixed.
He's got all the tools to be a successful 34 DE.
I thought you said you loved DL.I do too.I believe the game is won and lost on the line of scrimmage.I do not want this guy on my line. He's top heavy, and kinda tall to get the leverage. With those skinny legs,he's gonna get pushed around.I'd much rather have Raji at the nose, with Williams and Rogers on the ends. Now that's a DL(although Mario needs to pick it up),for a 3-4.This article asks,"Will Jackson go top 5?And I say, emphatically,NO! ...Not to the Browns.
Didn't you recently post that Maybin will be a bust?
That's how I feel about Tyson Jackson.
We just have different POV's. He gets a great push at the LOS and he often gets doubled up. He's not a pure pass rusher, but he does have a great initial push that threatens the opposing OL.
I really like the guy. Like I said, at #5? No way. At #15-20? Heck yes.
Oh, and I don't necessarily think Maybin will be a bust. But he's not a good pick for us to be an OLB.
You have your opinion of Jackson, and I am unlikely to change it. But in a couple years, looking back, if he goes at #9 to Green Bay or #12 to Denver, and we take, say, Orakpo and he busts and Jackson is a key to these teams 3-4 defenses, it won't seem like him at #5 would have been a reach. This is all hypothetical of course, and it very well may not happen, but a similar situation unfolded in 2005 with Merriman, where it would have been a reach at #3, but looking back, who wouldn't have taken him?
Bottom line: I think Tyson Jackson can be a good end in a 3-4, and if we had any pick after like #8, I think he would be a good pick.
I was just about to bring the Merriman situation up.
A few years ago, he was talked up to #3, and majority of Browns fans said "No way!". We wanted Rolle, Edwards, Johnson, or even Ware before him.
Either Ware or Merriman right now would have been that #3 pick.
However, that's assuming we had the DL to "block" for them.
Zaklco; If Jackson goes elsewhere and does great,it doesn't mean he wouldn't have been a bust here.He won't have to play against the AFC North 6 times a year.OK,Cinci is a reach.
Couch was the no.1 pick, and never reached his potential. If we'd have drafted McNabb, would he be where he is today?Where would Couch be?Maybe with the Pats, and 3 rings.(reaching again)
Gotta love it!!!
Go Browns!!!
